A heel can add to any outfit and add so much to the way you look, think about what a heel actually does for you, a heel forces the body to tilt up and out, emphasizing you breasts and butt, these are two great parts of your body to emphasize. It elongates your legs, defines your calf and lifts your butt, what a great easy way to look awesome in any outfit and at any fitness level.
So where do we begin, lets start small, and by small I mean maybe with a kitten heel or a small heel, go with a smaller size heel maybe an inch or two for your first pair of heels or maybe even a thicker heel, after you’ve mastered these heels, graduate into your super sky-high stilettos.
How do we know if a heel is too high, here is the test, stand in your favourite pair of high heels, now see if you can lift your heels one inch out of the heel, if you can move around in the heel and stand up on your tip toes one inch higher in your favourite shoes, then you have enough room to be comfortable, if you can’t do it or you feel too constricted or its not comfortable, push yourself up for that moment, your heels maybe too constrictive.
Pointy heels have a little bit different of a shape, instead of a round toe, the pointy heel kind of pushes your toes and squashes them a little bit, and in some heels like Louboutins, its actually part of the appeal that your feet and your toes look a little squashy, so if they start getting tired, that’s okay, give your feet a rub when you can.
Here are some tips and tricks on how to get used to those pointy toes, first, because it’s a pointy toe and its usually single soled, a jell insole will definitely help the comfort of your feet, do yourself a favour, you can get it online or at local stores because I guarantee once you slip them in, you’ll feel a lot better.
Another way is to find heels with thicker heels or smaller heels. Another thing you can do is find heels that have a little more support, maybe going up towards the ankle, like straps and tie, this will help support your feet in your heels just a little bit better.
So how do we walk in high heels, run, jump, squat… you just walk “heel to toe” , now that almost sounds like common sense but let’s review, not “toe to heel” , walking toe to heel will push your body forward and cause you to fall, and not flat-footed, that just looks like you’re stumping around, so walk heel to toe, practice slowly, heel to toe.
Walking heel to toe helps your balance, the next thing you consider is keeping your spine straight, so as you’re walking imagine your head and your spine and your neck on your shoulder all up straight and imagine that your spine is being pulled by a string, take small steps, dnt start by running or taking big leaps, small steps, heel to toe.
Invent your own signature strides, you could figure this out by watching people, you could go to a shopping centre and see how women are walking in heels, at a night club…but you can also look at youtube, look at runway shows and watch women walking in super high heels, you might pick up some tips and tricks from the pros just by sitting in front of your own computer.
Find something that has a line, when you practice on a straight line, it will help you keep your heel to toe strides in perfect balance so you can walk perfectly straight later on. If you are going up and down stairs, remember, hold onto the rails, don’t be daring… when you’re going down the stairs, plant your entire foot on the step, when going upstairs just use the ball of your toe, if you put your whole foot on the stair you may mischarge you stare and actually fall, so be careful.
Some experts recommend not to wear heels two days in a row, and sometimes heels are just valet heels, that means they are just there to look cute when you are getting out of the car at the valet and into that favourite restaurant, sometimes they are not meant to stand in all day long, keep that in mind, if your feet start to hurt give them a break. And what’s the most important tip? Practice!!! Practice makes perfect. Practice and your walk will be perfect just as good as any drag queen.
